How Often Should I Change My Oil?
How Often Should I Change My Oil?
Around Aurora, North Aurora, and Batavia, most drivers want a straight answer. No scare tactics. No fine print. Just “tell me when to change it so I do not wreck the engine.”
For most people, a solid rule is to change your oil every 5,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Do not wait 12 months if you already went 12,000 miles since your last oil change. And do not wait for 5,000 miles if you only drive a thousand miles per year. Time and mileage both matter.
This is a general guideline. Your exact interval can be different based on the vehicle, the engine, and how you drive. When in doubt, check the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual or on the manufacturer website. If you drive a Chrysler Pacifica or a Jeep, we also have full maintenance guides online that you can use as a reference:

Most drivers in this area fall into a few common groups. How and where you drive around I-88 and the Fox Valley has a lot to do with how often the oil really needs to be changed.
Low-Mileage Cars and SUVs
A lot of people around Aurora, North Aurora, and Batavia do not rack up many miles. Short trips to the store. School drop offs. Quick errands. That kind of driving never really lets the engine and oil warm up all the way.
Cold starts and short trips are hard on oil. The engine builds moisture and fuel vapors inside that oil, and they never burn off on five minute drives. Even if you do not hit 5,000 miles in a year, the oil still ages.
Low mileage drivers should plan on an oil change at least once every 12 months. That keeps fresh oil in the engine and flushes out what has built up from short trips.
If you are not sure where you stand, stop by and we can check the level and condition for you. No charge, no pressure. We would rather keep the engine healthy than guess.
Heavy-Duty Work Trucks and Hard Use
Work trucks take more abuse than the average commuter. Towing along I-88. Long idle times. Stop and go between job sites. Carrying tools and equipment. All that heat and load breaks oil down faster.
In heavy use, the safest move is to check the oil often and treat the 5,000 mile or 12 month guideline as a maximum. Many hard working engines will use a little oil between changes. Running low is when the expensive damage starts.
Bring the truck by whenever you are nearby. We will check the oil level and condition for free. If it does not need an oil change yet, we will tell you that too.
High-Mileage Vehicles
Once a vehicle gets past about 150,000 miles, the engine stops hiding things. Seals get tired. Internal parts wear. Many high mileage engines burn or seep a little oil. It is normal, but it needs attention.
Clean oil helps these engines stay alive. Stick with the 5,000 mile or 12 month rule and check the level between visits. That gives a high mileage engine its best chance to reach 200,000 miles or more without major repairs.
If you are not comfortable checking oil yourself, we can show you or do it for you. The check is free.
Full Synthetic vs Synthetic Blend
There is a big difference between full synthetic oil and a synthetic blend. Full synthetic handles heat, cold starts, and stop and go traffic better. It protects longer and is what most modern engines are designed to use.
A synthetic blend is regular oil with some synthetic added. It is fine to use if the vehicle calls for it, but for maintenance intervals it should be treated like regular oil. The safe approach is to act like it is not synthetic and follow the 5,000 mile guideline.
For full synthetic oil, most drivers are best served by 5,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Do not wait a full year if you already drove 12,000 miles. And if you only drive a thousand or two per year, do not wait for the odometer to hit 5,000.
Do I Need to Change the Oil Filter Every Time?
Yes. Every oil change needs a new filter. The filter holds the dirt, metal, and sludge the engine picks up. Changing oil without changing the filter leaves a lot of that junk behind.
Skipping the filter is like taking a shower and putting on yesterday's socks. It beats nothing, but it is not right. The filter is a cheap part compared to the cost of an engine.
Oil Life Monitors, Stickers, and “How Far Can I Push It?”
Oil life monitors help, but they are still just calculators. They do not know how cold your mornings were in North Aurora or how much towing you did on I-88.
If the display shows 50 percent, that is fine. Just do not stretch it. The safest plan is to use 5,000 miles or 12 months as your upper limit, even if the dash says you can keep going.
The reminder sticker is the same idea. It is there to keep you from forgetting. If you go a little past it, you will usually be fine. Once you are more than a month or about 1,000 miles over, you start asking more of the oil than it can give.
Straight Talk on Oil Change Pricing
One common question is, “Is 100 dollars for an oil change normal?” The honest answer is that it depends on what you are actually getting. Quality oil, a good filter, the correct amount of oil, and a trained technician are worth paying for.
The problem is the coupon traps. Some places advertise a cheap oil-only price. Then the filter, the right quantity of oil, an air filter you did not need, and a handful of extra additives push the total to 150 dollars.
At River Front Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, everything is included up front. Real oil. Real filters. The correct quantities. No surprises.

Amazing Experience
“ I’ve been meaning to leave this review for a few months now but always kept forgetting, wanted to tell a story of my amazing experience at River Front. My check engine light came on and was flashing while driving my Pacifica and I was close to River Front just before 5pm on my way home from work. I called the dealership and Renee told me if I was comfortable being the vehicle to them they probably would not be able to get it looked at that night but would get it looked at the next morning. I needed my van the next day but I had no other choice. I pulled into the service drive and was greeted within seconds by a man named Ezra who said he was one of the service advisors there. After taking my keys he met me as his desk where he asked me if I was the woman that had called and talked to Renee, after explaining what had happened Ezra started to get me written up. He told me I had a misfire on a cylinder in my engine which unfortunately was going to mean my vehicle was going to be spending the night. Turns out the gentleman that was sitting at the desk next to him was one of their mechanics who before Ezra had even finished writing me up had run back to his toolbox grabbed something and had already tested a few things and was certain he knew what was wrong. After finishing writing me up I had a seat in the waiting room and about 5 minutes later Ezra came out to tell me that one of my ignition coils was bad and needed to be replaced. To my surprise he said that they had one in stock but it was down at their truck center down the street and if I wanted to hang out Ezra said he would send his other mechanic Carlos down the street to get my part and we could get it done in the next 45 minutes! Of course I approved the repair and called my husband to tell him I wouldn’t need to be picked up. After waiting 45 minutes Ezra came out to tell me that everything was all done and that I would be getting to take my van home that night and it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg. Never before have I experienced this kind of service anywhere, let alone a auto repair place, they were honest, unbelievably helpful and fast. There really aren’t enough things I can say about the service I received from Ezra, his mechanic Ryan who did my repairs and even Carlos and Renee who helped make my crap day into a much much better one. Thank all 4 of you again for everything you do and I’ll be back to River Front for everything going forwards and I’ll make sure I send all my friends to Ezra at River Front! ”

“ Overall great and smooth experience. Dan Spooner and the rest of the team made buying a vehicle easy and fun. ”
