Ram Commercial and Work Trucks: Inspection Checklist for Heavy-Duty Use
Ram commercial trucks are built for hard work—hauling, towing, and handling job site demands day after day. But if you own or manage these vehicles, you already know that drivers aren’t always the ones paying for repairs.
That’s why routine inspections are so important. When work trucks are pushed to the limit—and operated by people who may not treat them like their own—catching issues early can protect your business from unexpected downtime and thousands of dollars in avoidable repairs.
This checklist is designed for Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks, whether you run a single vehicle or manage a full fleet. Each section highlights what to inspect, why it matters, and how often to do it based on real-world heavy-duty use.
Engine Oil & Filter
Why check it: Oil keeps high-load engines cool and protected. Dirty, gritty oil or rising levels in diesels can indicate deeper issues.
How often: Check weekly. Change every 5,000–7,000 miles for severe-duty use.
- Oil level (too low = wear risk; too high = possible fuel contamination)
- Oil color and texture (gritty, blackened oil may indicate premature breakdown)
- Oil filter condition for signs of clogging or leaks
- Check for visible leaks around the pan and gaskets
Transmission Fluid
Why check it: Heavy-duty use creates heat, which degrades transmission fluid and shortens component life.
How often: Inspect for leaks at every oil change. Check fluid condition every other oil change.
- Fluid color and smell (should be pink/red and clean, not dark or burnt)
- Fluid level (low fluid can damage gears and clutches)
- Transmission case and cooler lines for leaks
- Check for slipping, hesitation, or rough shifts during operation
Axles & Differentials
Why check it: Axles handle immense torque under load—fluid failure or leaks can quickly damage internal gears.
How often: Check for leaks at every oil change. Inspect fluid every other oil change.
- Differential seals and housings for signs of leaks
- Fluid condition (milky = water contamination; dark = excessive wear)
- Listen for unusual noises like whining or grinding
- Ensure vent tubes are not clogged
Brakes (Pads, Rotors, Fluid)
Why check it: Brakes wear faster on heavy trucks. Uneven or worn components reduce stopping power and increase risk.
How often: Inspect at every oil change. Flush brake fluid every 2 years or as needed.
- Brake pad thickness and even wear
- Rotor surfaces for grooves, rust, or warping
- Brake fluid level and condition (should be clear or light amber)
- Brake lines and fittings for leaks or corrosion
- Check for pulling, noise, or vibration under braking
Cooling System
Why check it: A healthy cooling system prevents overheating under load and extends engine life.
How often: Check monthly. Flush system every 2–3 years or as recommended.
- Coolant level and clarity (should be bright and free of debris)
- Hoses for cracks, swelling, or softness
- Radiator fins for blockages or corrosion
- Inspect water pump and thermostat for leaks
- Ensure overflow tank operates correctly
Fuel & Air Filters
Why check it: Dirty filters reduce power and fuel efficiency. Clogged diesel fuel filters can lead to hard starts and poor acceleration.
How often: Inspect every 10,000–15,000 miles. Replace as needed.
- Air filter for clogging or damage
- Fuel filter for water contamination or clogging
- Filter housings and seals for wear or leaks
Battery & Cables
Why check it: Power-hungry accessories and frequent idling stress batteries. A weak battery can leave a truck stranded.
How often: Inspect monthly. Load test twice per year.
- Terminals and cables for corrosion or looseness
- Battery case for swelling or leaks
- Cranking power (slow start = early warning sign)
- Check for draws from accessories that stay powered when parked
Suspension & Steering
Why check it: Suspension wear affects control, tire wear, and safety—especially with frequent heavy loads.
How often: Inspect at every oil change.
- Ball joints, tie rods, and control arms for looseness
- Bushings for cracking or excessive play
- Shocks or struts for leaking or reduced rebound
- Watch for steering pull, slop, or unusual noise
Tires & Wheels
Why check it: Cracks, uneven wear, or low pressure can compromise load safety—especially on dually setups or heavy upfits.
How often: Visually inspect weekly. Check pressure regularly.
- Tread depth and wear pattern for evenness
- Sidewalls for cracking, bulging, or cuts
- Air pressure adjusted for load and conditions
- Lug nuts for tightness and corrosion
Note: Many Ram commercial trucks use non-interchangeable wheels, so tire rotation may not apply.
Lighting & Safety Systems
Why check it: Failed lighting can lead to safety issues, downtime, or citations. Stay visible and compliant on the road and job site.
How often: Test weekly, especially before night driving or towing.
- Headlights, brake lights, and turn signals for brightness and function
- Trailer wiring and connectors for corrosion or loose pins
- Work lights, clearance lamps, and strobes as required
- Lens covers for cracks, fogging, or moisture
